Artist Profile: Brydee Rood
Growing up in Auckland and attending the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts Brydee graduated in 1999 with Bachelors in the top of the painting section.
In 2001 the world was this artist’s oyster and she moved to Japan undertaking what she describes as “my own residency” - living in Japan for 2 years as a registered alien, teaching to support her studio practice and exhibiting locally. In 2003 travelling to Mexico she undertook a similar self initiated program concluding a substantial solo exhibition Fresco at Galeria de Arte Joven, Difocur - Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada, Culiacan before returning to New Zealand and completing a Masters degree in interdisciplinary practice at Elam in 2006.
Dedicated to exploring relationships and collaborations with fellow artists Brydee is a member of various groups and projects such as ground roots collective Nature’s Ninja’s and ‘Hello Lamb Project’. The artist states “It is my aim to sow the seeds of collaboration and exchange into the future and enjoy the undercurrents of ideas and friendship between the participating artists”.
Adding to her international travels and experiences Brydee has recently been notified by the Kaikai-Kiki Foundation (New York) that she had been selected from international early career artists to present “Plastic My Punch” - An interactive photographic and sculptural installation.
Brydee will be exhibiting her project in a 6F white cube in GEISAI Miami / Pulse Contemporary Art Fair 2008 / Wynwood - Art and design district / Miami.
Rood has developed an ongoing collaborative partnership with German media artist Karin Hofko; working together for the 1st time creating the ‘Happy Bag Picado’ workshop; a free participation project scheduled within Rirkrit Tiravanija’s exhibition MAGAZINE STATION NO.5 at ARTSPACE in Auckland.
Questioning how humans impact on the habitat through consumption and use. ‘Happy Bag Picado’ links to Rood’s perspective of eco-logical awareness and sensitively of habit reusing this man made universe of plastic and waste. Stay tuned for a further update on Rood’s and Karin Hofko’s ‘Happy Bag Picado’ workshop coming to headland SCULPTURE ON THE GULF 2009.
Brydee would like to thank James Wallace (Wallace Arts Trust) who has kindly granted her a financial stipend for my 10 days in Miami and SONY (NZ Ltd) has loaned me a SONY laptop and digital camera for my exhibition.
